      Community Buy-in Will Help Tiny Homes Succeed, says Brantford Resident

      Brantford resident Lisa Moore says tiny homes could be part of a viable solution to the housing crisis in the city, but it will take buy-in from the community and there will need to be regulations in place to make it work.

      “In my dreams, I hope that everyone who (has) the space would volunteer to have a tiny home built to help someone else,” Lisa says.

      In order to encourage interest from homeowners, Lisa says people willing to offer property to build tiny homes in the city could be offered breaks on taxes or utility costs.

      Because of Community Living Brant’s strong commitment and belief in asset-based community development (ABCD), we set forth a proposal for a new and exciting initiative focused on this for Brant, Brantford and Six Nations.

      ABCD uses community development as a tool to help people to have strong connections and friendships in their neighbourhoods.

      In May 2020, we were successful in receiving a three-year grant funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the project called “Belonging Brant”, which was modelled after Befriend Inc. in Australia.

      Community Advocate Encouraged by Citizens’ Response to Housing Crisis

      When she looks around Brantford, Birgitta P.M. says she sees a growing number of people who are affected by the housing crisis. But she also sees many concerned citizens who are ready and willing to do something to help.

      And this is encouraging, Birgitta says.

      “I see people waking up to and becoming aware of the homelessness crisis and who are beginning to care enough to look for and create viable possibilities and real options and opportunities,” says Birgitta, a Brantford resident and community advocate.

      Citizen-Led Housing Initiative Births New Circles

      The April 4 citizen-led Tiny Homes Working Circle in Brantford, Ont. saw the creation of new, smaller working groups, all aimed at helping carry the pilot project to build two tiny homes in the city through to fruition.

      This feisty and persistent community movement is unfolding in natural step with the gifts and talents its members are bringing.

      As the movement has been developing, and its members express their interests and offer their gifts, the working circle has been shifting its form to support them.
