There’s a New Neighbourhood Stop for Paris Dogs, Thanks to Innovative Idea

There’s a New Neighbourhood Stop for Paris Dogs, Thanks to Innovative Idea

Kim Stremler meets lots of dogs and their owners walking through her Paris, Ontario neighbourhood every day and she has come up with an idea to make their journeys more enjoyable.

During their walks, the dogs sometimes get thirsty or want a treat. Sometimes they need to relieve themselves. And sometimes they need to take a break.

Noticing this, Kim decided she wanted a “dog stop” in front of her home to provide the amenities the pooches and their human friends need during their strolls.

A Collaborative Mantra of Thanks to Community

A Collaborative Mantra of Thanks to Community

Collaborative art can be an important representation of a person, neighbourhood or community. Creating a poem, artwork or creative project together allows not only the recording of the gifts of folks, but it also ensures continued telling of a story over time.

Belonging Brant and Community Living Brant welcome all opportunities to share stories in creative ways, so when Mabe Kyle brought their gifts of Poetry and Collaborative Process to the ABCD Symposium this year, we were inspired and grateful to have them there.

Below is a copy of the poem created by participants at the May 31 Symposium through Mabe’s collaborative process and creative prompts. Thank you Mabe for holding space for us to be creative together.

Community Buy-in Will Help Tiny Homes Succeed, says Brantford Resident

Community Buy-in Will Help Tiny Homes Succeed, says Brantford Resident

Brantford resident Lisa Moore says tiny homes could be part of a viable solution to the housing crisis in the city, but it will take buy-in from the community and there will need to be regulations in place to make it work.

“In my dreams, I hope that everyone who (has) the space would volunteer to have a tiny home built to help someone else,” Lisa says.

In order to encourage interest from homeowners, Lisa says people willing to offer property to build tiny homes in the city could be offered breaks on taxes or utility costs.

      The ‘ABCD’ of Belonging Brant

      The ‘ABCD’ of Belonging Brant

Because of Community Living Brant’s strong commitment and belief in asset-based community development (ABCD), we set forth a proposal for a new and exciting initiative focused on this for Brant, Brantford and Six Nations.

ABCD uses community development as a tool to help people to have strong connections and friendships in their neighbourhoods.

In May 2020, we were successful in receiving a three-year grant funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the project called “Belonging Brant”, which was modelled after Befriend Inc. in Australia.

Community Advocate Encouraged by Citizens’ Response to Housing Crisis

When she looks around Brantford, Birgitta P.M. says she sees a growing number of people who are affected by the housing crisis. But she also sees many concerned citizens who are ready and willing to do something to help.

And this is encouraging, Birgitta says.

“I see people waking up to and becoming aware of the homelessness crisis and who are beginning to care enough to look for and create viable possibilities and real options and opportunities,” says Birgitta, a Brantford resident and community advocate.

Citizen-Led Housing Initiative Births New Circles

Citizen-Led Housing Initiative Births New Circles

The April 4 citizen-led Tiny Homes Working Circle in Brantford, Ont. saw the creation of new, smaller working groups, all aimed at helping carry the pilot project to build two tiny homes in the city through to fruition.

This feisty and persistent community movement is unfolding in natural step with the gifts and talents its members are bringing.

As the movement has been developing, and its members express their interests and offer their gifts, the working circle has been shifting its form to support them.
