Circle of Friends Golf Tournament was a Chance to Visit Friends and Have Fun, Says Participant

By Deron Hamel

Richard dela Rosa says participating in Community Living Brant’s 35th annual Circle of Friends golf tournament on Aug. 18 was an opportunity to see old friends and colleagues as well as show his support for an organization he knows first-hand brings great value to Brant County.

And, of course, it was a chance to have fun playing 18 holes of golf, he says.

Richard is a former Community Living Brant staff member who has played in the past three Circle of Friends golf tournaments, and for him it’s important to keep those ties strong, he says.

“Obviously, I like to give back to Community Living — I see the direction that they’re going and having everyone involved in community efforts, so coming back yearly and donating what I can donate is always a pleasure,” says Richard, who now works for Lexsuco Corp., which was one of the organizations that donated to the silent auction that was held at this year’s tournament.

“Everyone deserves a chance, and community involvement is key in Brantford for people being supported (through Community Living Brant).”

This year’s Circle of Friends golf tournament was held at Oaks of St. George Golf Club in Paris, Ont. Proceeds from the tournament are going towards Community Living Brant’s Pathways program.

The Pathways team is dedicated to supporting individuals in the community who are unhoused, precariously housed, or a risk of losing their housing in the near future. They also provide assistance to those with concurrent disorders who are seeking mental health and addictions services.

In addition to a round of golf, the tournament included prize giveaways, a silent auction, live entertainment from local musician Chris Strei as well as lunch and dinner.

The tournament raised $14,073 for the Pathways program.

Asked what he would say to people considering joining next year’s tournament, Richard says he would tell them to “get involved.”

“Everyone deserves a chance, and community involvement is key in Brantford for people being supported (through Community Living Brant),” he says.

“When I see the people I supported and the people that I worked with, it’s always a warm welcome.”

Richard says this year’s tournament had a larger turnout compared to past tournaments he has played in, a success he chalks up to Community Living Brant offering participants two meals as well as live entertainment.

“It was nice to see that the volume of golfers was greater than I have seen in past years,” he says.
